Humpback whales have a high intellectual level and sociability. They emit various sound signals that can be heard very far underwater.

During the experiment, the researchers used sonar equipment and broadcast audio recordings of humpback whale songs to other individuals. Although most of the animals ignored this message, the female Twain swam next to the scientific vessel for about twenty minutes and repeated much of what she had heard.

A total of 36 "responses" were received confirming the active participation of the female in communication. However, the meaning of the signals still remains unsolved. Maybe it was something like greetings that caused reciprocity.

The described experience was the first communication between humans and a whale in the latter's language.
