Important Change in the Operation of Speed Cameras on Spanish Highways
A significant change has been made in the operation of speed cameras on motorways in Spain, affecting all drivers. A new decree of the Ministry has modified the metrological control of these devices, which has resulted in their recalibration.
New Rules for Fixed and Mobile Radars
Until now, the fixed and mobile speed cameras used by the traffic service applied the "5 and 7" rule to determine when to apply a fine. With the new decree, these criteria have changed.
Adjustments to the Margins of Error for Speeding Tickets
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) detailed that, previously, the margin of error for fixed radars was +/-5 km/h for speeds up to 100 km/h and +/-7 km/h for mobile radars. For speeds above 100 km/h, the margin was +/-5% or +/-7%. The new decree establishes a margin of 3 km/h for fixed radars at speeds up to 100 km/h and 3% for higher speeds, while mobile radars have a margin of 5 km/h for speeds up to 100 km/h and 5% for higher speeds.
New Margins for Radars in Short Sections
For measuring speed on short sections of the motorway, the margin of error will be +/-3 km/h or +/-5 km/h for speeds up to 100 km/h and +/-3% or +/-5% for speeds over 100 km/h. These new tolerance limits will redefine the application of speeding fines.
