According to ANFAC, we are 7.7 points below the European average and are in penultimate position, ahead of the Czech Republic and Hungary. Manufacturers are asking for faster charging points to keep up.

Spain is making progress in terms of electrification, but at a slow pace and far from the pace of the European Union as a whole. We are close to 30,000 charging points in 2023, up one-third on the previous year, but a long way from our target of 45,000 points.

“The year 2024 started poorly, we should have a market of about 280 thousand electrified passenger cars, that is, on average about 23 thousand every month, and in the first two months of the year we produce about 8,500,” they explained. José López-Tafall, director general of the association, during the presentation of the 2023 Electromobility Barometer.

We do not reach the average level in Europe either in terms of market or infrastructure, López-Tafall emphasizes. The differences in mobility between wealthy European countries and less wealthy countries continue to widen. Spain is the first country in the group of the most lagging behind. Between the European average (22.3%) and Spain (12%) there is no one who is above average.

Every second sale was made through the business channel.

The business channel is the one that attracts the most in the market. Of the 124,628 electric vehicles sold, company-oriented sales accounted for 51% of the total, with private and rental channels accounting for about 10%. Almost every second electrified passenger car is purchased by companies. About half of the electrified cars sold in Spain were registered in Madrid. The communities with the highest share of electrification were Navarre, Catalonia and Castile-la-Mancha.

Car charging stations in Spain

Car manufacturers are asking the government to ensure continuity in the MOVES and MITMA MOVES relief plans and reduce bureaucracy to avoid being left behind. By 2030, 300,000 public charging stations will be needed on intercity roads. The goal is to end this year with approximately 63,000 charging stations.
