The participation of the Spanish men's national team in the upcoming European Championship in Germany may be under threat, and leading Spanish clubs may be excluded from major European tournaments starting next season. This is due to the fact that FIFA and UEFA may decide jointly to suspend Spanish clubs and national teams from participating in international competitions.

FIFA and UEFA Are Considering Sanctions Against Spain

The reason for this possible sanctions decision is the alleged interference of the Spanish government in the affairs of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF, Real Federación Española de Fútbol). Local media reports that the Spanish government is already aware of possible measures by FIFA and UEFA.

It is reported that the Spanish government intends to create a special commission to monitor the activities of the federation. Because of this interference, the participation of the Spanish men's national team in the upcoming European Championship in Germany is under serious threat. Moreover, the leading Spanish clubs may be banned from European tournaments from next season.

Arrest of Luis Rubiales

Earlier, in March, the Central Operational Unit of the Spanish Civil Guard conducted searches at the headquarters of the federation and at the house of former President Luis Rubiales. After that, the Spanish prosecutor's office issued an arrest warrant for the 46-year-old sports functionary.

In early April, the police detained Rubiales at the airport while returning to Spain from the Dominican Republic, but soon released him. The acting head of the RFEF, Pedro Rocha, has also become a suspect in the investigation on corruption charges.
