Taxi drivers staged a march against Uber and Cabify
Today in Barcelona, taxi drivers took to the streets of the city again to protest against the "impunity" of platforms such as Cabify, Uber and Bolt. According to them, these companies provide their services using "illegal VTC" (licenses for renting vehicles with a driver).
Reasons For The Protest
Barcelona taxi drivers are on strike again today. From 10:30 their march will begin along Gran Via Avenue, from Piazza di Spagna to Passeig de Gràcia. It is highly likely that traffic on both streets will be completely blocked, and there will be traffic problems in the surrounding areas. The reason for the protest is the requirement for local authorities to legally restrict the activities of platforms such as Uber and Bolt, which taxi drivers consider illegal competition.
The Beginning of the Protest
The protest began at the Venetian Towers in Piazza di Spagna, from where taxi drivers slowly moved along the Gran Via de las Cortes Catalanas, one of the main thoroughfares of the city. A meeting was held at the intersection with Passeig de Gracia, where a decision was made on two actions.
Resolution of The Protest
The drivers agreed that if the Ministry of Transport does not reduce the cost of insurance after the elections, they will block the port and airport of Barcelona. It was also decided that if the Catalan government does not adopt a law regulating the activities of the VTC by September 1, taxi drivers will block the city's ring roads and the airport.
According to the city police, about 900 vehicles took part in the demonstration.
