Traveling by Train with Dogs: Options in Different Regions of Spain

In Spain, it is possible to travel with dogs on most commuter trains without the need for a transport, including Renfe Cercanías, Feve, Rodalies de Catalunya and Euskotren. In all these services, dogs must wear a short leash and a muzzle, with the exception of Euskotren, which does not require a muzzle but does not accept dogs of breeds considered potentially dangerous (PPP). Since April 12, 2024, Mallorca trains have also allowed dogs to travel without a carrier. It is always recommended to carry the dog's health card.

RENFE, FEVE AND RODALIES OF CATALONIA

The short-distance rail networks in Spain managed by Renfe allow you to travel with dogs of any size. In Cercanías and Feve, access is free, while in Rodalies de Catalunya there is a cost of 25% of the base rate. One dog per person is allowed, which must have a muzzle and a short leash, although in practice, if the dog is calm, the reviewers are usually flexible about the use of the muzzle. Previously, some lines such as the one in Madrid prohibited traveling with dogs at peak times, but this restriction has been eliminated. On the C-9 Line that connects Cercedilla with the Port of Navacerrada and Cotos, there are still restrictions for the transport of animals during the winter season.

EUSKOTREN

Euskotren allows travelers to take pets, except dogs of potentially dangerous breeds. Dogs must be on a leash or in the arms of the handler. It is recommended to use caution in ticket validation areas and gates to avoid accidents. The company may limit the access of animals in case of large crowds, such as sporting events or parties. The caretakers are responsible for any damage caused by their pets. Euskotren also advises that travelers with pets be considerate of other passengers and avoid imposing the presence of their animals if there are people who feel uncomfortable.

RAIL SERVICES OF MALLORCA

In Mallorca, the train network of Servicios Ferroviarios de Mallorca (SFM) allows traveling with dogs since April 12, 2024. Dogs must be in the last car, fastened with a short leash and muzzled, or inside transport baskets. Those who travel by transporter do not pay a ticket, but those who are tied up pay the same price as an adult person. The travel of females in heat and dogs of potentially dangerous breeds is prohibited. It is recommended to avoid peak hours to facilitate coexistence between travelers and dogs. The company advises to respect the space of other passengers, especially if they show fear or discomfort in the presence of animals.
